Nu ik niet meer actief bij onderwijs betrokken ben, lees ik de berichten over ChatGPT minder gretig dan mijn nog actieve oud-collega's, maar helemaal onaangeraakt laten ze me niet. Het is een beetje melig, maar ik kon het niet laten en vroeg ChatGPT naar de verschillen tussen de oorspronkelijke roman Everything I Found on the Beach van Cynan Jones en de redux-versie van die roman (die alleen in de Nederlandse vertaling is verschenen).

Hoewel het programma zich wel degelijk verontschuldigt als iets buiten zijn bereik ligt, heeft het de neiging om maar wat aan te fantaseren. Dat bleek me toen ik wat andere vragen eerst had gesteld, waarop het eenvoudigweg geen antwoord kon formuleren, bijvoorbeeld over de kwaliteit van de dialogen in de musical Checkpoint Charlie, die nu door Nederland reist. Zo ver kan het programma nog niet in de databanken graaien.

Het antwoord op mijn vraag naar de belangrijkste verschillen tussen Everything I Found on the Beach en de redux-versie van die roman luidt, zonder verontschuldiging over te geringe 'kennis':

Het jaar van publicatie van de roman is goed, maar dat kan iedereen op z'n klompen vinden op het internet. De redux-versie is echter alleen in een Nederlandse vertaling verschenen en wel in 2023. Het kletsprogramma slaat er maar een slag naar en de plank meermaals mis.

De Engelstalige roman uit 2011 heeft in de paperbackversie van 2014 volgens Bol.com 221 pagina's, in de paperback-versie van 2016 bij Amzon.com zelfs 248, wat er aanzienlijk meer zijn dan de 131 pagina's die de vertaalde redux-versie telt. Het verschil in structuur is zo vaag geformuleerd, dat het haast niet niet kan kloppen. Wat ChatGPT zegt over de Narration is volledig onjuist. Ook de info over de Setting is uit een heel dikke artificiële duim gezogen. En het aantal personages is in de redux-versie juist... hoe zal ik het verwoorden: gereduceerd.

Zijn er echt docenten die zich door dit soort blabla om de tuin laten leiden? Ik kan dat maar niet geloven.

Interessant is het geheel andere, meer bescheiden antwoord dat ik kreeg toen ik aan mijn initiële vraag alleen het woordje 'Dutch' toevoegde voor 'redux-version'. Ik kan niet zeggen dat het antwoord nu inhoudelijk veel beter is:
